| BELLEVUE BOTANICAL GARDEN This is arguably the finest garden in the Seattle area. Begun in 1957 on the grounds of a private home, the property was later donated to the City of Bellevue, and under the care of a volunteer organization the garden has expanded progressively since the early 1990s. Several landscapes are on view: the Dahlia Garden, Alpine Rock Garden, Fuschia Garden, the visitor center set about with outdoor sculpture, the Waterwise Garden, the spectacular Perennial Border, the Yao Chinese Garden, a Japanese tea house, an installation of waterfalls and bridges leading into the forest, and a beautiful trail through the forest. The garden features one of the area's best Christmas light displays: Garden d'Lights. An extensive portion of the grounds are lit up by hundreds of thousands of lights formed into the shape of flowers, plants, and animals. My kids' favorite is the purple spider on a brilliant web creeping toward a fly it has trapped. Admission is free. Parking is free.
