There are a few notable stops nearby: The visitor center at the Gingko Petrified Forest State Park is a fine mini-museum that explains the geological history of Eastern Washington. The specimens of petrified wood - Gingko and many other tropical species - came from an ancient lake that had filled up with logs and then was covered in lava. Eastern Washington and Oregon were once the most active volcanic areas in the world - ranking alongside the Deccan Fields in southern India. The lava formations extend for hundreds of feet and form fascinating landmarks all over the area.
