| GRAND COULEE DAM This dam is one of the most impressive sights in Washington state. It is the largest concrete structure in the world and among the top 5 biggest dams. It is a major contributor to the state's electrical supply and provides irrigation water to the farms of eastern Washington down the artificial Banks Lake. On this day, I toured the dam with my twin boys after a visit to Silverwood in northern Idaho. Tours had been shut down entirely after the 9/11 attack, but by this time the eastern, side section of the dam was open for tours. Judging by the chamber of commerce website, the walking tour over the top of the dam is now open. In the evenings in the summer there is a laser light show against the water spilling down the side of the dam. I remember that we ate at an excellent Mexican restaurant near the dam. I've located its website and it appears to still be in operation: La Presa. La Presa Mexican Restaurant Grand Coulee Chamber of Commerce by Bob Kelly http://www.BobsPacificBeachHouse.com |
