Did you know that Hood Canal the
only fiord on the west coast in the
United States? Hood Canal is an arm
of Puget Sound. It was created as
the Vashon Glacier gouged its way
southward during the glacial period
10,000 years ago. Hood Canal
separates the Kitsap Peninsula from
the Olympic Peninsula along its
entire length. The U.S. Navy's Naval
Base Kitsap, Bangor Annex, is
located on the eastern shore of
Hood Canal near Silverdale. Several
rivers flow into Hood Canal, mostly
from the Olympic Peninsula,
including the Skokomish River,
Hamma Hamma River, Duckabush
River, Dosewallips River and Big
Quilcene River.
