INTERVIEW WITH A REAL FORKS VAMPIRE
Fans of Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular teen romance series,
Twilight, are flocking to Forks in record numbers. The town of
Forks - described in the Seattle Times as "a place to get gas" -
is nonetheless surrounded by some of the most remarkable
scenery in the world: the Hoh Rain Forest, the wild beaches of
the Olympic National Park, Lake Ozette, and Cape Flattery on the
Makah Indian Nation. One can just imagine a swarthy, romantic
vampire lurking behind each moss-laden tree or wandering the
lonely beaches (well, perhaps your teen daughter can imagine
it).
The Rialto Beach House is the perfect place from which to enjoy
the wonders of Forks with renowned Rialto Beach just three
miles down the road, the beautiful Quillayute River actually on
the property, and Forks a bare 13 miles away (for gas and
groceries).
INTERVIEW
Notoriously shy and usually more interested in feasting on
humans than speaking with them, we nonetheless tracked down
an authentic Forks vampire for this one-of-a-kind interview:
Q: Are vampires real? Where do they come from? And why
Forks of all places?
A: Vampires are a real West End story. This is Forks,
Washington - the vampires' Florida. The vampire race is
centuries old. We were in Rome during Caesar's reign and
stories exist of how we came into being in Mesopotamia. Paris
is a favourite haunt of many old vampire families, but Forks has
become our new Shangri-La. Many vampires have year round
residences here on the North Olympic Peninsula, but some feel
the very long, sun filled summer days to be just unbearable. Its
the grey, the lack of sunlight that most humans find, well, I think
the term is, depressing. For a vampire the lack of sunlight is a
comfort. Here we can relax and feel at home.
From the looks of it you may think its best left to the vampires.
This vampire will let you see an insiders view and maybe inspire
you to visit some of these now famous vampire haunts. While
in Forks, notice that everyone is really vampire friendly. Its the
first thing on their mind, “have a bite of Forks”, they all say.
Q: When I visit Forks, where am I most likely to spot a vampire?
A: Downtown Forks, you’ll want to load up on supplies and the
best place to do that is The Forks Outfitters. There you’ll find
everything you need for homesteading: food, clothing,
hardware, pet food, and its all under one roof.
While in downtown Forks you might want to stop and see some
of the places the Twilight movie made famous. Quillayute Valley
High where the charming Bella goes to school. The Hospital is
not far away and any vampire seeker will want to know where it
is, in case of emergency. What is not mentioned in the book but
is a favourite of mine, I take all my guests there is the Forks
Coffee shop. Mind you I’ve never been there for breakfast or
lunch, but for dinner I highly recommend the steak and french
fries. (Parisians loves steak and fries).
Whether you camp out or stay at a local B&B, accommodations
abound my personal favourite is Rialto Beach House. You’ll
want to be out at dusk or dawn and just listen. You’ll hear
vampires and many other creatures of the night.
Q: Where do vampires go for fun?
A: Vampires only show up in town when we are in need of
supplies. Mostly you’ll find us in the great outdoors. The
ancient forests offer us shelter and structure that make flying
so very interesting. Head west to the Rialto Beach and La Push
area coast. At Three Rivers find the roads that lead up onto the
Quillayute Prairie. High up on this rise are our ball fields. The
younger teams play at the Cemetery. While just down the road
is the much larger field where the professional teams play.
Notice the great expanse of sky and field. It's like Harry Potter’s
Quidditch, but without the brooms.
I must admit that after summers in Paris, it can be quiet out
here. When seeking entertainment vampires fly off to Port
Angeles. In Port Angeles its strictly after hours as the locals are
less friendly to “foreigners”. Do check out the Lyre's Club with
good local music and Cajun inspired food. I can also
recommend (and did so to Edward for his first date), Bella Italia,
but stay away from anything smoked on the menu.
Q: How is the vampire community handling all the newfound
attention of tourists?
A: All the attention is really great as vampires were not really
used to it. I hope you come to visit and stay a while in this grey
and rainy area of the world. I also hope that for the second film
the director films right here on location. The Vampires didn’t
choose Oregon - we chose Forks, Washington. There's a
reason for that, come and see why.
