MUSHROOM HUNTING BY HOOD CANAL
One of our favorite activities in the Olympic Peninsula is mushroom picking.
To be a mushroom hunter, you need to be prepared. There is no room for
error when choosing the right mushroom, so do your homework before you
go. We choose chanterelle mushroom picking on the Duckabush River that
is located just north of the Triton Cove Beach Home for our mushroom
hunting adventure. We choose chanterelles because they taste great, are
quite a delicacy, and are easy to identify in the woods.
If you travel from the Triton Cove Beach Home north, to the Duckabush
Road and follow it to the Duckabush Trailhead, you can park along the road
and find a treasure trove of mushrooms. Travel north from Triton Cove on
HWY 101 to the Duckabush Recreation Area, FS Road #2510. Turn west and
drive about 6 miles to FS Road #2510-060 and the trailhead. One of the
reasons we like this spot is that the river is to the south and the road to the
north, and if we ever get turned around in the woods, it makes it easy to
get back to the road. It is also a good idea to bring a GPS, and a
communication device just in case. Wear bright clothing so you stand out
in the woods. The chanterelle mushrooms are distinct and bright orange in
color which makes the margin of error a little less. The best time of the
year has been late September to late November, depending on the rain
patterns. Dress for wet weather and have good shoes for slippery moss
covered logs.
