QUILLAYUTE RIVER
Rialto Beach House is riverfront property. A short walk along
our collection of trails, (maps available at the cabin) brings
visitors to Rich Wine Bar, a very popular fishing hole. The
Quillayute River is formed by the tributaries of the Sol Duc, the
Bogachiel, and the Calawha Rivers, while the Dickey River
enters a few more miles down stream. The Quillayute River is
only about four miles long, but its tributaries reach far into the
interior. On a drive from Port Angeles to the Rialto Beach
House, you will cross the Sol Duc River five times. These rivers
are all home to wild fish. Steelhead and all types of salmon
enter this river network via the Quillayute River. Drift boat
fishing or kayak trips can be booked through local guides. One
can also just walk down to Rich Wine Bar (accessible also by car
and truck) and "plunk" (license required).

From the Rich Wine Bar on a clear day you can see an amazing
and rare site: Mount Olympus with its huge snow dome and
glaciers. Mount Olympus is the highest peak in of the Olympic
Mountains at 6,900 feet. Local guide and backpacking legend,
Jim Podlesny, has guided several groups to the summit.

The final miles of this short river pass through the Olympic
National Park at Rialto Beach. Our trail map can guide you to
trails inside the park leading to the river slough and James
Pond trails. At the mouth of the river is Rialto Beach on the
north side and La Push on the south. This estuary is home to
many birds, Double-Crested Cormorants, Buffleheads, Common
Goldeneyes, and Common and Red-Breasted Mergansers all
frequent the river. Bald Eagles, Ravens, and varied Thrushes
all find support in the trees at the rivers edge.
