| BUMBERSHOOT Over the Labor Day weekend, Seattle hosts a music, comedy, film, and arts festival called Bumbershoot. Despite the name, the weather is usually sunny. It's a popular event, so planning ahead is key. You'll make the best use of your time by purchasing tickets in advance, arriving at the gate an hour early, and using the program schedule to plan your day. As soon as you pass through the gate, find the line for the evening main stage shows and pick up your free pass. You'll miss these shows if the passes run out. Try to arrive 30 minutes ahead of each scheduled event to secure a good seat. We attended Bumbershoot so far in 2007 and 2008 and enjoyed the experience. Some of our favorite events: A festival of short films made by Northwest directors who were given severe time limits to prepare, shoot, and edit their films. They had a limited selection of props and filming locations chosen by the festival, and they had to use a designated group of actors. The funniest film was a competition between Death and a Robot in playing chess, checkers, and a series of easier and easier games with Death becoming more and more frustrated as he loses every game. A group from San Francisco called Cyclecide put on a human-powered carnival made up of rides powered by the participants as they propel the machines ahead by furious pedaling. They also put on a bike rodeo and perform stunts on bikes. The group has been traveling the country since 1998 and turns up at quirky festivals like Bumbershoot. Last year the comedy track of Bumbershoot was expanded significantly. We watched a couple stand-up comedians and a live comedy radio show. There's lots of interesting ethnic foods to try and shopping booths with crafts and Third World products.
