| HATLEY CASTLE AND GARDENS This is a delightful garden west of Victoria that we had entirely to ourselves, while Butchart Gardens is thronged by crowds. When we visited a small museum was open in the basement, but it wasn't possible to tour the house. The castle was built by James Dunsmuir, BC Premier from 1900 to 1902 and son of Robert Dunsmuir, wealthy coal baron who built Victoria's other faux Scottish castle: Craigdarroch. The garden was divided into two main sections. Live peacocks wandered around the ornate Italian garden with marble statuary. The extensive Japanese garden was centered around a large pond and made use of water features.
